A few weeks ago I was going through some business documents when a thought hit me out of nowhere, and it turned into a tweet. If a clone is a copy of the original, and Genesis says God made humans in His image, was creation the first cloning? I haven't been able to shake the question since, so here's the long version.

I'm coming at this as an agnostic, which means I'm comfortable leaving the God question open. I want to take the text seriously and take the science seriously, and see where the two meet.

The tempting version of the idea

Genesis 1:27 says God created mankind in His own image. A clone is a genetic copy of its source. Put those side by side and the metaphor practically writes itself: God as the original, humans as the copy.

It gets more interesting a few chapters later. Genesis 5:3 uses almost the same language for ordinary reproduction. When Adam had lived 130 years, he had a son "in his own likeness, in his own image," and named him Seth. The Bible describes God making Adam and Adam making Seth with the same words. The text itself invites the comparison between divine creation and passing yourself on to the next generation.

Where the metaphor breaks

The metaphor runs into trouble with DNA. Genesis 2:7 says God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed life into him. The raw material is dirt. In John 4:24, Jesus says God is spirit. There's no divine genome to copy. Whatever "image" means, it can't mean genetic replica, because there's nothing genetic on God's side of the equation.

So what does it mean? People have argued about that for centuries. Thomas Aquinas placed the resemblance mainly in the human intellect, and John Paul II cited him on exactly that point in his 1996 message on evolution. Most Old Testament scholars today read it another way. Mesopotamian royal ideology treated the king as a god's image, his representative on earth. J. Richard Middleton argues that Genesis takes that royal title and gives it to every human being. On that reading, the image is a job: represent God's rule on earth through everything people build and cultivate.

That second reading makes the cloning question sharper. If the image is about humans exercising creative authority over the world, cloning is that authority at its most extreme.

What cloning actually is

Biologically, a clone is less mysterious than people think. Identical twins are natural clones. One fertilized egg splits, and you get two people with nearly identical DNA. Nobody thinks one twin is a copy of the other's soul.

Artificial cloning of animals mostly uses somatic cell nuclear transfer. Scientists take the nucleus out of an ordinary body cell, place it into an egg whose own nucleus has been removed, and let that egg develop. That's how the Roslin Institute in Scotland produced Dolly the sheep in 1996, and it took 277 attempts to get her.

In 2018, a team in Shanghai used the same technique to produce Zhong Zhong and Hua Hua, the first primates ever cloned this way. A macaque is a lot closer to us than a sheep, which is exactly why that paper got the world's attention.

Setting the record straight on Dolly

You've probably heard that Dolly aged too fast, and plenty of people took that as proof that clones come out defective. That story was everywhere in the early 2000s, and it hasn't held up. Dolly died in 2003 from a lung disease unrelated to how she was made. In 2016, researchers at the University of Nottingham examined 13 aged cloned sheep, including four made from the same cells as Dolly, and found them healthy and aging normally. A year later the same group X-rayed Dolly's actual skeleton and concluded that the original worries about her arthritis were unfounded.

Cloning is still a hard, wasteful process. The clones that make it through, though, can live long and healthy lives.

A clone would be a person

This is where most arguments about cloning go off the rails. People assume a human clone would be some kind of hollow copy, missing whatever makes us human. The science points the other way. A human clone would be a baby born years after its source, with its own mind and its own choices. Genetically, it would be a delayed identical twin.

That lines up with Catholic teaching more than people expect. In the same 1996 message, John Paul II called evolution more than a hypothesis while insisting that the spiritual soul is created directly by God. Under that view, a clone would share DNA with its source and still receive a soul of its own. For an agnostic like me, the point translates cleanly: copying a genome still produces a new person.

It also takes some heat out of the creationism versus evolution fight. In that framework, the history of the human body and the image of God answer different questions, so a person can accept the biology and still hold on to the theology.

The real dilemma

Most of the world has already drawn a line on human cloning. In 2005 the UN General Assembly adopted a declaration calling on member states to prohibit it. The vote was 84 to 34 with 37 abstentions, and the declaration is nonbinding.

The ethical problems are serious. Cloning a human would demand huge numbers of donated eggs, and the UN text specifically raises the risk of exploiting women. It would also drop a child into a strange position, growing up in somebody else's genetic shadow.

So here's where I land. The idea of God as the original and humans as the copy is fun, and Genesis 5 shows the biblical writers saw a family resemblance between creating and begetting. The genetic version of the metaphor falls apart once you read Genesis 2. The authority version survives, and it puts the question right back on us.

We can copy a genome now. Whether we're wise enough to handle that is still an open question. Made in the image of a Creator or made by evolution alone, we're the ones holding this power, and we answer for how we use it.
